What is the TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language)?

Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an exam of the English language. It is a standardized test to evaluate the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who want to immigrate to English-Speaking nations for their higher studies or better career opportunities. 

The TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) test is administered by the Educational Testing Services (ETS), it is the body that conducts Toefl exams which is accepted by almost every English language professional and academics bodies. What are the types of TOEFL Exams?

There are mainly three types of TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) exams:


TOEFL PBT (Paper Based Test) is done in regions of the world where there are no computer or internet facilities available. TOEFL PBT has only 3 sections, Writing, Reading, and Listening. It does not include the speaking section because of the unavailability of the required equipment. Candidates had to use their pencils to mark the answer on their answer sheets. PBT is no longer continued by the Educational Testing Services (ETS) because in today’s time internet and computer are available in almost every single TOEFL test centre.

Computer-Based TOEFL

Computer Based TOEFL examination was started in 1998, a candidate can achieve a maximum of 300 points under CBT. It has 4 sections that include, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Listening. The Grammar and Listening sections of CBT are adaptive, which means the questions you receive are based on your level of English. As a candidate, you should know that easy-to-answer questions carry fewer points if you want to enhance your score, you need to improve your level of English. 

Internet Based TOEFL

Internet Based Test (IBT) was started in 2005. It is the online version of the TOEFL exam for candidates who want to take the language exam to immigrate abroad.  98 percent of candidates have selected TOEFL IBT over other TOEFL types worldwide which makes it the most preferred mode of the exam. Internet Based Test uses very less resources and it is more convenient to take for Candidates.

It includes 4 sections, Speaking, Listening, Writing, and Reading.  In different regions of the world where internet and computer facilities are available, TOEFL IBT has replaced CBT and PBT types of TOEFL exams. 

Other types of TOEFL Tests

TOEFL Junior

TOEFL Junior Comprehensive test is an examination that includes a middle school level English Proficiency test. It evaluates the Reading, Listening, speaking, and writing skills of candidates.


TOEFL Institutional Training Program (ITP) is used to evaluate English proficiency in the internal structure of institutes. It is quite similar to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) PBT. The only difference between IELTS PBT and TOEFL ITP is that ITP is a test of written expression and IELTS PBT is not.

What is the TOEFL Exam Pattern?

TOEFL examination pattern includes four sections: Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking. TOEFL Exam pattern of all four sections is mentioned below:

TOEFL Writing

  • Time Duration – 50 minutes
  • Score Range – 0 to 30 Points
  • Number of writing tasks – 2

Writing Task 1 –  Candidates will have to read a passage on a certain topic or subject, listen to a lecture on that specific topic, and then write an essay in which you have to summarize the passage that you read and listen.

Writing Task 2 – Candidates will have to provide their responses or viewpoints as needed for the task.

TOEFL Reading:

  • Score Range – 0 to 30 Points
  • Duration – 54 to 72 minutes
  • Number of Questions – 30 to 40
  • Candidates will have 3 or 4 passages
  • Every passage will have a set of questions, candidates will have to answer the questions.

TOEFL Listening:

  • Score Range – 0 to 30 Points
  • Duration – 41 to 57 minutes
  • Number of Questions – 28 to 39
  • Candidates will have to listen to academic lectures audio recordings, conversations, and discussions.
  • The recordings will contain questions based on the lectures/discussions that candidates will have to answer.

TOEFL Speaking

  • Score Range – 0 to 30 Points
  • Duration – 17 minutes
  • Number of speaking tasks – 4
  • Candidates will have to give their opinion on a specific topic
  • Based on reading and listening tasks, candidates will be needed to speak
  • Candidates have to answer all three sections with two questions in each section. 

TOEFL Test Score

A TOEFL score ranges from 0 to 120, which is 0 to 30 for each module. Initially, the Speaking section is scored with a scale of 0 to 4, but then it is converted into a 0 to 30 scale. The table below shows the score range of all four sections of the TOEFL test:
