Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB)

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) calculator is the national standard in Canada for describing, measuring, and recognizing the English Language Proficiency of prospective immigrants and adult immigrants for living and working in any Canadian province. CLB has 3 stages and a total of 12 levels. These levels show the individual’s language competence or proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking.

Why do you need to know your CLB level?

If you are applying to immigrate to Canada, you will almost certainly need to know your CLB level. Candidates who apply for Canadian permanent resident status through any program managed under the Express Entry System are required to prove a minimum CLB level based on that class, and qualify for the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

When you want to study in Canada, knowing your CLB level can be helpful. The Canadian Language Benchmark is used in Canada to assess your ability to comprehend the course materials of your intended study program and it is also required by your future Canadian university or college.

What is CLB eligibility?

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) requires scores from any of the authorized language tests such as IELTS, CELPIP, TCF, and TEF. Only the approved language tests are accepted to assess the applicant's English and French language proficiency.

Every Canadian immigration program has different CLB level requirements, applicants need to match that CLB score or level through their language proficiency test score. If applicants are unable to obtain good marks in their language test they will not be able to meet the CLB level requirement for the visa program.

What are the approved language tests?

Here are the language proficiency tests that are authorized or approved by the Canadian immigration authorities:

IELTS

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. The IELTS exam is one of the world’s most popular English language proficiency tests for global migration and higher studies. The IELTS exam is designed to assess the language ability of individuals who are willing to study or work in a foreign country where English is the native or main language of communication. IELTS scores are valued and recognized all over the world.

CELPIP

Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP), is Canada’s leading general English language test that evaluates an individual's English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The CELPIP test is designed for Permanent Residency, citizenship, and professional designation.

TCF

The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF) is an international french language proficiency exam that evaluates non-native french language speakers’ French language abilities. TCF exam is an approved french language proficiency test by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)  for Canada Permanent Residency applications.

TEF

TEF (Test d’Evaluation de Français) is an international specification test that evaluates an individual's proficiency in the French language. The TEF exam is regulated by Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris (CCIP) and is accepted as proof of French language proficiency in Canada, Quebec, France, and Switzerland.
