TCF vs TEF
The TCF and TEF (Test d’Evaluation du Français) exams are French language proficiency tests and are equal in terms of exam format and duration. Both are computerized and equally accepted by Immigration, Refugees, and, Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

TCF exam format
The TCF Canada examination comprises three compulsory tests and two optional tests.
- Compulsory Tests
- Listening Comprehension – The test includes 29 MCQs which you have to answer in 25 minutes.
- Command of lexical and grammatical structures – It contains 18 MCQs which you have to answer in 15 minutes.
- Reading Comprehension – It contains 29 MCQs which you have to answer in 45 minutes.
The compulsory tests last for 1 hour and 25 minutes and test your listening and reading skills, and grammatical knowledge of the French language.
- Optional Tests
- Oral Expression – It is a face-to-face, one on one interview with an expert in French which lasts for 12 minutes.
- Written Expression – It is a written test that contains 6 exercises and lasts for an hour.
The optional tests last for 1 hour and 12 minutes and test your speaking and writing skills in the French language.
What happens on the day of the TCF exam?
- You must arrive at the allocated test center on time with your passport and invitation.
- Your documents will be verified by a TCF test invigilator and then you’ll be shown to your seat.
- You are strictly prohibited from chatting to other candidates during the examination and if caught cheating, you will be suspended from the test and will have to wait for a few months to retake the examination.
TCF Canada score chart
The TCF Canada score is presented by using CEFR levels to evaluate the level of proficiency in the French language attained by the candidate. The levels range from A1 (lowest) to C2 (highest). The levels corresponding to the TCF marks are as follows :
- A1(Elementary Level) : 100 – 199 points
- A2 – (Lower Intermediate Level) : 200 – 299 points
- B1 – (Intermediate Level) : 300 – 399 points
- B2 – (Upper Intermediate Level) : 400 – 499 points
- C1 – (Advanced Level) : 500 – 599 points
- C2 – (Superior Level) : 600 – 699 points
TCF exam fees
If you plan on giving only the compulsory tests of the TCF Canada exam, the TCF exam fees would cost around $200 and if you wish to attempt the compulsory tests as well as the optional tests together, you have to pay exam fee of $350. The Oral Expression test and the Written Expression test cost $100 each.
